I just had a geekgasm

This is the best thing in the entire world. When I am a grown up human being, I will save my monies (almost 5000 of them) and buy one, and I won't leave the house for days.

Capable of tilting forwards and backwards, a raising and lowering upper section holding up to three monitors on the swing arm, boasting LED working lights and Bose surround sound speakers, adjustable keyboard tray and leg rest, and multiple inputs for all sorts of computers. This is the pinnacle of human achievement, and when it comes with a neural net interface, my transition into the technological singularity will be complete.

iMac > Mac Pro

Gizmodo has published an article with many reasons why the Mac Pro is almost useless compared to the new iMac. The niche for Mac Pro is getting smaller by the day, as I love the new iMacs and find them perfect for many of the things that only the Mac Pro has been able to do in the past.

Gizmodo's Best iPhone apps of the week

In this week's charmingly tawdry app roundup: Voices, creepily modulated! Annoying trips to Kinkos, averted! Cats, artfully superimposed! Photos, easily shared! iPhone speakers, blown! Call of Duty, iPhone'd! Google Maps, humiliated! Certifiably good games, discounted! And more...
Personally I've tried Voices, and it's much fun! CatPaint looks much fun as well! though thoroughly useless.

3D Scanner

Using only a basic webcam, Qi Pan of the Cambridge University Engineering Department has created a program that will make a 3D model of any object shown to it. It works by "Delaunay tetrahedralisation of points obtained from on-line structure from motion estimation, followed by a probabilistic tetrahedron carving step to obtain a textured surface mesh of the object." which sounds like a string of made up words, but seems to work. Watch!

Next Nintendo Handheld may have free 3G wireless a la Kindle

While this would be amazing, there are problems as Nintendo's president states

"Only people who can pay thousands of yen a month [in mobile phone subscriptions] can be iPhone customers. That doesn't fit Nintendo customers because we make amusement products," Mr Iwata said.

The Kindle's one-off cost would better suit Nintendo's customer base, he said. "In reality, if we did this it would increase the cost of the hardware, and customers would complain about Nintendo putting prices up, but it is one option for the future."

Google Earth 1984 Edition

Georgia Institute of Technology's students are using CCTV video to map actual vehicles and people into Google Earth. Easily this tech could be expanded into new and interesting applications inside GE: Cloud patterns, Live traffic visuals, Sporting events as they occur?! But there's a dark side to this, what if you tracked people? With enough cameras, you could follow someone, and monitor their movements. Can you honestly say that you know a government agency that would pass that up?

Medicare FAIL

Medicare, in an astounding display of both stupidity and insensitivity, has denied coverage for a $150 iPhone app. Roloquo2Go is a text-to-speech iPhone app that's meant to aid those with autism, cerebral palsy, ALS, Down Syndrome—pretty much anyone who has a disability that makes speaking a difficult venture.

Medicare's alternative? a government-funded $8000 desktop computer that can have no other function than text-to-speech.

What. The. Heck?

Medicare knows this, but they refuse to pay for iPhones, on the assumption that people would use it for other things. Yes, like calling the doctor?

Obscura Digital's 18ft multitouch wall

Obscura Digital touts this massive multitouch display at the Hard Rock Cafe in Vegas as "possibly the world’s highest resolution interactive display available to the public", and say about it's specs:

The basics are 3 HD projectors behind an 18 foot multi-touch wall. The difference here is that the whole thing is one 6000 (almost, it is actually 3x1920 projectors, so it is a bit less)pixel plate, with over 100 4K-6K images/videos being displayed at one time. No "deep zoom" needed, everything is real-time. Also unique is the way we scale across GPUs seamlessly.

AT&T's iPhone MMS

MMS for iPhone launches September 25, which I would not describe as "Summer", but it is on it's way. Coming in the form of a software update to the iPhone 3G and 3GS, this feature is quite anticipated.

Quoth the AT&T:

An Update on iPhone MMS for our Mobility Customers

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We've been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone's multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.

We're riding the leading edge of smartphone growth that's resulted in an explosion of traffic over the AT&T network. Wireless use on our network has grown an average of 350 percent year-over-year for the past two years, and is projected to continue at a rapid pace in 2009 and beyond. The volume of smartphone data traffic the AT&T network is handling is unmatched in the wireless industry. We want you to know that we're working relentlessly to innovate and invest in our network to anticipate this growth in usage and to stay ahead of the anticipated growth in data demand, new devices and applications for years to come.

We thank you for your business and look forward to keeping you updated on our initiatives.

Glowing Baby Monkeys

Scientists gave marmosets a gene that made their feet glow green, and one of the animals passed it along to its offspring — the first time that an added gene has been inherited by a monkey. It was a milestone, experts said, that should make it easier to produce animals with versions of human disease for medical research.

This is terrifying people, it's one short step from glowing feet to giant 50-foot tall ones with lazers.

Supah cool holographic DVDs!

General Electric is inventing "holographic storage", a process in which chemical changes in the form of patterns will be stored onto disk and unlocked through the use of lasers, will allow up to 500GB to be stored onto a single disk.

Brian Lawrence who manages General Electric's holographic project says that "these holographic disks could offer 20 times the capacity of a single layer Blu Ray disk".
